Acid Reflux: Symptoms to Watch for and Treatment Options

To know the symptoms and treatment of acid reflux, you should first understand what exactly this diagnosis means.  Acid reflux disease is commonly associated with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), but having one does not mean you absolutely have the other.   The stomach makes acid to aid in the breakdown of food particles.  Sometimes, if the stomach produces too much hydrochloric acid, it will creep back upward and actually get into the esophagus.  The lower esophageal sphincter, a tiny flap at the bottom of the esophagus, allows food to pass from the esophagus into the stomach.  If the sphincter gets too relaxed or the muscle is weakened food and acid have a greater chance to reflux upward.

Almost everyone, from grandma to a coworker, has their own home remedies for heartburn.  This burning, on fire sensation in your esophagus caused by regurgitated acid can be so painful you don’t want to move or even breathe.  In all likelihood though, everyone has several items within their own household to aid in heartburn relief.  These methods are especially helpful for those who try to avoid prescription medications and associated costs, or those who simply prefer a more homeopathic or natural approach to lessening their symptoms.

Home Heartburn Remedies in Your Kitchen

We are all aware of the foods that may exacerbate the relentless heartburn symptoms, however most people don’t think about which foods could sooth the pain.  Many people have found bananas, papayas and pineapple actually ease the pain.  Some have looked to a handful of raw almonds to aid in their discomfort claiming the oils in the nuts help neutralize that acid feeling in the esophagus.  Chewing a glove of garlic may also assist with relief of that nagging heartburn sensation.  You might end up with bad breath, but it’s worth the disappearing act of heartburn.  Herbal and ginger teas have also been beneficial.

Home Heartburn Remedies in Your Medicine Cabinet

Look to your medicine cabinet for more options.  You can drink a tablespoon of baking soda in a glass of warm water for relief.  Apple cider vinegar is also pretty popular for heartburn pain.  Drink a sip or two of this stuff and you might just be pain-free.  Those aloe vera capsules you’ve used for sunburn pain can also be taken with a glass of water for heartburn pain and indigestion.

Home Heartburn Remedies and Lifestyle Changes

In addition to the measures mentioned above, several things regarding how and when we do things could also affect our heartburn symptoms.  Of course, cutting out the foods and drinks known to exacerbate the pain is imperative.  This includes fatty greasy foods, fruits and vegetables high in acid, coffee, caffeinated drinks, alcoholic beverages and smoking.  Although you don’t eat your cigarettes, you still inhale the abrasive chemicals that can increase the heartburn sensation.  You can also avoid lying down for three hours after your last meal, stop the late night snacking and second helpings at the table, as well as elevating the head of your bed.

If your symptoms are recurrent, more than 2 times a week and are not helped with the above home remedies for heartburn relief, it is advised to consult your physician.  There may be a more serious underlying condition needing diagnosis and treatment.
