Between the two of us, we were eating something like a bottle of tums and rolaids each in two weeks! That couldn't have been good for us!" - Irene

Zegerid Side Effects: Another "Me To" PPI

Adding to the long list of "Me To" PPIs (proton pump inhibitors) available today, let's focus on Zegerid's indications, side effects and contraindications.  First, we need to understand the chemical makeup of the drug.  Zegerid is a combination of omeprazole (brand name Prilosec) and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda).  The sodium carbonate raises the pH in the stomach so the omeprazole can do its job of reducing stomach acid before the acid attacks the pill and breaks it down.  This drug has obvious benefits for those suffering with heartburn pain caused by acid reflux and its symptoms.

Zegerid is available by prescription only and not covered by most insurance companies, costing its users approximately $300 for a single months supply.  The oddity in the chemical make up is obvious when you compare the 20 mg strength to the 40 mg strength currently offered.  Each 20 mg capsule has 1680 mg of sodium bicarbonate, as does the 40 mg capsule.  Therefore, if you take two 20 mg doses, you double the baking soda; and when taking one single 40 mg dose, though it's twice the omeprazole, you still end up with 1680 mg of sodium bicarbonate.  The same is true for the unit-dose packets in a powder for oral suspension.  Interesting information, to say the least, for those with high blood pressure and who are trying to save money by doubling the 20 mg dose.  According to the American Heart Association, foods only qualify for the label "low sodium" if there is 141 mg of sodium or less per serving.  Knowing this, the Zegerid side effects may not be pleasant.

Indications of Use:

This PPI is generally prescribed for short-term use, 4 to 8 weeks, for treatment of duodenal ulcers and benign gastric ulcers, and GERD ( gastroesphageal reflux disease).  It has also been prescribed for erosive esophagitis, another complication of GERD, usually for eight weeks and another 4-week course is sometimes considered if response is slow.

Zegerid Side Effects:

Regardless of which medicine you are taking, you run the risk of potential side effects.  Some of the more common and less threatening Zegerid side effects are headache, nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea or constipation, white patches or sore inside the mouth, and even mild fever.  As always you need to stop taking the medication immediately if you experience severe side effects such as easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness or heartbeat irregularities.

More not so friendly Zegerid risks:

There are a plethora of drug interactions related to Zegerid.  You will definitely want to consult your physician prior to taking this medication if you are on any of the following medications:

  • Ampicillin - antibiotic
  • Biaxin (clarithromycin) – antibiotic
  • Plavix – prevention of blood clots
  • Cyclosporine – immunosuppressant
  • Valium (diazepam) - anxiolytic
  • Iron supplementation
  • Nizoral (ketoconazole) - antifungal
  • Dilantin – antispasmodic/antiepileptic
  • Prograf – post transplant antirejection
  • Coumadin (warfarin) – anticoagulant/blood thinner

As this is not a complete list, you'll want to make sure your doctor is aware of all prescription and over-the-counter medications you are taking currently.  Don't forget to mention any herbal supplements, vitamins and minerals as well.  Such a the lengthy contraindication list, as well as the sheer cost and side effect list of Zegerid, makes one wonder who can actually take this medication.
