ACIPHEX (rabeprazole sodium) Delayed Release Tablets is yet another in the PPI (proton pump inhibitor) with a series of related side effects. As a prescribed medication for GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), ACIPHEX is commonly prescribed in a 20 mg tablet to be taken once daily. In most cases it is prescribed for short term usage, 4 to 8 weeks, for treatment of acid reflux symptoms which suggests the esophagus should have ample time to heal. In more serious cases of hypersecretory conditions, ACIPHEX may be prescribed on a long term basis. At this time, ACIPHEX is not available over-the-counter.
Drug studies have shown it to be safe for children 12 and over. It is a class B pregnancy drug, meaning it isn’t expected to be harmful to your unborn baby, but thorough testing hasn’t been completed, and it’s not known whether ACIPHEX is passed into breast milk or its effect on a nursing baby. Consult your physician if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or are nursing. ACIPHEX has the common side effects associated with most acid reflux treatment regimens; headache, stomachache, dry mouth and diarrhea. Some of the more concerning side effects are insomnia, nervousness and rash. In more severe cases there has been hives, difficulty breathing and facial swelling. For any severe reactions or you feel you are unable to tolerate the side effects of ACIPHEX, immediately discontinue use and consult your prescribing physician for alternative treatment. If you are prescribed ACIPHEX, make sure your physician is aware of your other medications, vitamins or herbal supplements, especially if you are taking: Coumadin, Digoxin, Neoral, Nizoral, Plavix, prednisone or other steroids. These medications all come with their own plethora of side effects and ACIPHEX may or may not increase those. Anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen have been known to exacerbate acid reflux symptoms and another treatment modality should be considered to get the full benefit of prescription ACIPHEX. Sodium is a component of this medication; for patient’s with high blood pressure this may increase your risk for blood pressure control problems and dosing adjustments of other medications. The cost of this medication without insurance can be well over $100 for a single months’ supply. ACIPHEX is a delayed release drug and is slowly absorbed by your body; do not expect immediate acid reflux symptom relief. And as with all medications, be sure your primary care provider has a detailed history and physical examination to limit any potential side effects or drug interactions. ACIPHEX has also been prescribed for treatment of H. pylori in the triple therapy method (two antibiotics and a PPI), duodenal ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome and Barrett’s esophagus. |
